Roaming Sea Kayaking in the Isles of Scilly

Pack your camping kit into your sea kayak and journey from island to island, waking beside white-sand beaches and following the best of the weather and tides. With an experienced guide, quality kayaking equipment and the logistics organised, you can focus on the freedom of a proper Isles of Scilly adventure.

Is This Sea Kayaking Trip Right for Me?

We class this as a grade Red.  This roaming trip is for paddlers with some previous sea kayaking experience. Crossings between islands can be more challenging when the weather changes, so the trip is not suitable for complete beginners.

You should be ready to:

• Have at least three days of sea kayaking experience in a closed-cockpit kayak with a spray deck.

• Paddle for five days in a row, usually for four to six hours each day, depending on the weather and the group.

• Carry your camping kit from the beach to a campsite that may be up to 500 metres away.

• Travel light and feel comfortable sleeping in a small tent.

• Feel comfortable in lumpy seas, windy conditions or moderate water.

If you have less experience, one of our beginner trips or our St Martin’s trip may suit you better. Call us and we will happily talk it through. Experience in other watersports may mean you already have useful confidence and sea awareness.

We use Dagger Stratos 14.5 ft sea kayaks in small and large sizes. The boats have a capacity limit; the cockpit seat is 45cm wide, they are suitable if you are 6 ft 2" or shorter, and have a weight limit of 120kg including camping kit.

What Will We See and Do?

Wake to birdsong, pack your tent into your kayak and paddle towards the next island. Along the way, you may encounter puffins, Atlantic grey seals and razorbills, with white-sand beaches, clear water and wide views across the archipelago.

There is no fixed route — that is part of the adventure. Using our local knowledge, we choose the best option each day for the weather, tides and group. Campsites on St Martin’s, Bryher and St Agnes give us a brilliant range of inhabited and uninhabited islands to explore.

Simply enjoy being guided by Mark, or use the journey to develop your sea kayaking skills under his experienced tuition. After a day on the water, relive the adventure over a drink or meal in an island pub, walk up a hill for the sunset, or settle into camp for a well-earned sleep.

What’s Included in the Trip Price?

• Experienced sea kayaking guidance and instruction throughout the trip.

• A closed-cockpit sea kayak and spray deck.

• Paddle, buoyancy aid, cag and helmet.

• A long john wetsuit if required — although we will keep our fingers crossed for shorts weather!

• Campsite fees for five nights.

What’s Not Included?

• Travel to and from the Isles of Scilly, approximately £180.

• The inter-island ferry between St Mary’s and St Martin’s, approximately £14 return.

• Your camping equipment.

• Food and drinks for the week.

There are pubs on each island if you do not want to cook, plus shops along the route for supplies. Once you have booked, we will send a full kit list and explain how much storage space you will have in your kayak.​
